How to Find a Water Well on Your Property

In any household, it is disheartening to wake up and not have access to clean and fresh water. To begin drilling a water well on your piece of land, you must look for the most logical place. The right location must be identified for any well to succeed.

Methods of finding a water well in its natural location include the following;

1. Geological-Hydrological Assessment

The first step is to take is to do a geological and hydrological survey of the property. This involves checking the ground, especially water-bearing rock formations, and the depth of the water table. The water table is the level reached where the ground mostly comes in contact with water.

If you want information on the groundwater in your location, you can approach any geologist or hydrologist to get the information you need. They can help find where to drill for the aquifers, the underground water-bearing, permeable rock in your area, and also provide information on how deep your water table is.

2. Test Your Soil

Obtain a soil analysis done on your land to get information on the quality of water found in the ground and the prospect of getting a water well. All of this can happen with soil samples as well; chemicals or a high salt concentration can affect the water you receive from your well.

To check the soil, you should take a soil sample from different areas of your land and submit it to a reputable laboratory for examination. This will tell whether your land is suitable for a water well. If so, the report will let you know if other means of water acquisition may be necessary.

3. Use of a Groundwater Locator

A groundwater locator can be defined as an instrument used to identify where water is located in the ground. This is made possible by determining the electromagnetic conductivity of the ground since it’s known to have a direct relationship with water.

Groundwater locators can be driven into the ground in many different spots on the project site. This device will then give you a reading of the existence of underground water and its level. The readings can help you find where to drill for your water well and where to avoid drilling.

4. Historic Water Sources

If your land has been used for many years, there is a possibility of having a water well or springs on the property. Knowing the history of the land can be incredibly informative regarding the current water supply in your region. Consult historical maps or do a physical evaluation to determine whether wells or springs exist on your piece of land.

5. Well Logs

Logs can yield valuable details and results. They can show water-yielding formations situated in your area, the water table depth, and the water quality.

Well logs are available from local water well drillers and government agencies and can be found online. The geology and hydrology of the area will then be extracted using the logs, and the best place for the well will be determined from the results.

6. Use of a Divining Rod

A divining rod, also called a dowsing rod, is a natural technique for finding subsurface water presence. It comprises one framework of two Y-shaped rods of either wooden or metallic material, which are grasped by the user's extremities.

The reason for using a divining rod is that when placed over the water source, it will cross, or the handle will twist. Although dowsing has not been proven to work, many people attest to having been helped by dowsing in finding underground water.

7. Hire a Professional

While you have seen what you can do to get a water well drilled yourself, if it is still challenging to determine the best place to drill your water well, hiring a professional well driller is highly advisable. They have all the knowledge, experience, and necessary equipment to help you identify and determine the right location for your well, as well as provide professional services in drilling and maintenance.

Although it is easy to say that you want to drill a water well in your compound, getting the correct location may require a lot of effort. But fortunately, you can follow the aforementioned steps to improve your chances of getting a rightful location. It will increase your chances if you ask for professional advice, utilize more sophisticated equipment, and consider any historical water sources that might help lead to that ideal well site.
